Museums to visit on your vacation to Puerto Vallarta: 3 different options

The museums in Puerto Vallarta are part of the culture and art of the city. Spend an afternoon touring the museums is a great option to do different activities in your visit to Puerto Vallarta while you know about its history.

Although Puerto Vallarta has grown considerably in a short time (it is only 100 years old being a city), the main museums that currently exist in the port are only three: the archaeological museum of Isla Cuale, the Naval Historical Museum and the chocolate museum or chocomuseo.

These museums are very interesting and with unique twists. The three are located in the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta.

  • Archaeological Museum of Isla Cuale
The museum is an attraction on the island. It exhibits a collection of ceramics and art about the traditions and customs of native peoples of the region, dating from the pre-Hispanic period between 5000 and 2000 BC. Among its pieces are hunting tools and collection to a grave. All the archaeological pieces were donated by regional museums of Guadalajara, Michoacan and Colima. Admission is free, open Monday through Saturday.

  • Naval Historical Museum
Located right next to the famous arches of the Malecon, the Naval Historical Museum is part of the network of museums of the Mexican Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR). It was the fourth of its kind to open 18 years ago. Previously this building with colonial style, was the office of the port captaincy in 1974, then a naval hospital and later a headquarters of the local Naval Command. This museum exhibits paintings, documents, maps, scale models, photographs, navigation instruments, uniforms and more of the SEMAR. There is an area with temporary exhibitions of local, national and international artists can exhibit their works. The museum has a small restaurant on the second floor, which in addition to offering delicious dishes, has a beautiful view of the bay. The meals and drinks have different prices. Admission is free, open Tuesday through Sunday.

  • Chocolate Museum
It is unique in all of Puerto Vallarta. As its name suggests, you can learn about chocolate history and processes in its facilities. Opened in 2017, the chocomuseo offers an exhibition while offering various workshops to create your own chocolates and chocolate drinks. We recommend visiting their website to learn more information. Admission is free from Monday to Sunday. What is cost are the products, workshops and programmed activities.
