While Los Muertos beach is not as beautiful as Gemelas or Conchas Chinas beach, this jewel of the city stands out for being surrounded by renowned restaurants and the famous shell-shaped pier. The pier is an excellent place to take a picture of the souvenir or check in in your social media.
Los muertos beach is usually full of bathers, vendors, music, activities and much more. So if you like to meet new people or you are struck by areas with a lot of movement, los muetos is the perfect beach in Vallarta for you.
To arrive you must go to the area known as the Old Vallarta; you will find that most of the businesses and homes that are located here retain traditional facades; When you walk between the cobbled streets to reach the beach the dead will feel like in a town with friendly people.
Speaking of tradition, today we refer to beach the dead in that way without having an explanation. The real reason behind the peculiar name of this beach is unknown. But there are several stories… The Vallartans grew up with the story that many years ago pirates came to the bay to bury their treasures and take advantage of the port, a situation that caused constant battles between pirates and locals who, as they could, defended themselves. The result of these meetings were dozens of bodies watered on the beach.
Others say that many people drowned in the waters of the beach, and the tide returned the bodies to the sand … The version that has reliable evidence of the name «Los Muertos» beach, is that many years ago the beach was an ancient and sacred Indian cemetery: Contemporary locals found ceramic vessels containing bones of humans. This version is supported by an archaeologist, the Dr. Joseph Mounjoy, who studied in the most important unviersity of the state: University of Guadalajara.
Returning to the present, on the pier of the dead you will appreciate the beautiful bay and the sunsets. We recommend staying at night; the pier lights up and the ship the Marigalante makes its tour with fireworks.
From the pier you can sail by boat to beautiful nearby beaches such as Colomitos, Las Animas, Mismaloya or Yelapa. The price per trip depends on your destination and how many people go on the boat. You can negotiate the price with the boatman, it is convenient to set a round trip with the same boatman.
We hope that on your next vacation to Puerto Vallarta you will visit Los Muertos beach to live for yourself the experience of being in a historic and popular place in Vallarta.
